South of the Parakrama Samudra (Polonnaruwa) is a statue, almost 4m high, which is unusually life-like and is the subject of much controversy, several explanations being offered as to its identity. The most popular is that it is Parakramabahu the Great, but there is justification for it being that of a sage .. Pulasthi or Agastya. Whoever it might be, the statue is one of the finest pieces of sculpture in this country
